Horse

This is a far more personal piece for me. In Venice I saw a magnificent marble horse head preserved in its original setting in an 18th century artist's studio. The whole setup had a profound effect on me. Unfortunately you weren’t able to take photographs so I have carried the image in my mind. Last year in the British Museum I saw a similar head in a display cabinet and excitedly made a sketch. I later showed it to my Dad, the Artist Ralph Howell FRSA, and he said, "Ah yes I remember this, when you were little I carved my version of this head and it was on the wall for a while."

I worked out that I must have been about 5 at the time so seeing the Horse head in Venice must have triggered the memory.
