The Big V has been a hugely exciting project for me. The opportunity to think about a public sculpture for my home town and what that should represent, what form it should take, was like embarking on our own Grand Designs project.
Inspired by Andy's vision for public art worthy of the town, I set to work and the concept just tumbled into my head. I've always been fascinated about how creative thoughts happen, about that spark which fires an idea. I recently re-read HG Wells 'War of the Worlds' and realised that the inspiration for The Big V must have come from Jeff Wayne's Album which I was hooked on as a child. The album art had an illustration of the cylinder landing on Horsell Common with Ogilvy the astronomer looking on in Edwardian dress.
When I imagine the sculpture on a frosty morning surrounded by mist, this is what comes to mind.
